I had same problem, saved the parts and rebuilt the things by drilling out the nuts and rethreading them. Then made some new cages using sheet metal, welded the cages in with the rebuilt nuts. Time consuming maybe but cheap fix.

If it's the nuts you can't find................... Then why not get a piece of 1/2" or 5/8" X 1 1/8" bar stock (whatever the size) and cut it in squares, drill and tap it. It will work perfectly and you'll never see it again anyway. If it's the cages you need.............. how hard can it be to fabricate something to hold the nut? Sometimes it's simpler to make a piece than to over think it.

Making them was an alternative to not being able to find them.
Don't ever get in to restoring a real antique (early 1900's) where nothing is available after market. You won't enjoy it.

Making them was an alternative to not being able to find them. Don't ever get in to restoring a real antique (early 1900's) where nothing is available after market. You won't enjoy it. I just finished a NCRS/Bloomingdale gold 57 Vette, it all had to be original or NOS for judging purpose. 6 year project, I searched 4 years for sorrect original seat frames, 5 years for a set of fender scoops, I absolutly know the pain you speak of, all to well! as far as the cage nuts go, I knew someone made them just wasnt sure where to get them, we can fab just about anything from Smokers, tube frames, nitro powered harleys, a helicopter, sea doo xp1200 powered go kart (dont try this one unless you really like getting hurt) , jet powered 4 wheeler, nitrous injected chain saw, etc etc etc(its kinda boring here in the winter hahaha) But to mess with cage nuts for a couple hours just seems like a losing situation, I figured 2 jours in the shop, in theory the shop gets 50 bucks an hour to be up and running, so I'd have 100.00 in cage nuts again its all in theory. but probably the heat bill, gas, wleding material etc etc to build a cage nut isnt worth the few dollars to buy them, and like you said that is if they are a production item.
