Went into the garage to do some more assembly work on the Cutlass, and saw a new crack in the dash, running front to back, right behind the steering wheel.
It wasn't there 2 days ago. We've had some cold weather the last couple of days... down in the low teens at night. Apparently that's a bit too cold for the 47 year old dash.
So now I've got to think about what I want to do. I know a few of you have some good dashes... but I'm not sure it makes sense to spend $250-350 for a 47 year old dash that just hasn't cracked yet. And from what I've been seeing on your posts... having a dash and glove box door recovered is going to set me back close to $1000.
I may have the repair guy repair this new crack, just as he did on the 2 or 3 little ones while the car was in the body shop... just to get me buy for a while.
Perhaps that will get me by for a year or so...

I brought one back to life by soaking it with baby oil for months before I needed it. I soaked rags, kept them saturated and kept rubbing it in. It turned out supple and looks like new.

Sorry to hear that.. I ruined one several years ago by leaning on it when it was cold. The baby oil sounds good, how many babies do you need to make enough? Do not use ArmorAll,the silicone in it will cause problems if you ever need to paint near it,that stuff causes problems,fish-eyes galore. ---bil (little known sister to Bond girl Pussy Galore)

Before I had the last repairs done, they had me occasionally spray "Restore" on the pad, and rub it in, to make the pad more "supple". So I did that over the last year or so while it was home while I was putting in the drivetrain.
So I guess that worked really well.
