How do you test/troubleshoot the fuel gauge and circuit?

Easy way to check the gauge. Unplug the wire from the tank. Grab a 12 volt test light. Grond the light and stab the wire. If the gauge is ok it should go past full with key on, engine off. If it does, condemn either the sendor but first look for a bad ground at the sender. That is the skinny wire that is part of the sender.

The tank has roughly 3 gallons in it... and the gauge reads right at or slightly above "E".
Checked the ground and it's good (at least a test light lit up when put to power.
Inserted the grounded test light into the wire from the gauge... gauge moved to "F".
Could be that's just the way the gauge will read with this much gas in it. I'll remove and clean the resistor strip and contacts, and see if that "helps" the gauge read more true... like somewhat under a 1/4 tank.

I don't know if any of you subscribe to Auto Restorer, but they have some really great how to info and explain things very well and go step by step through their projects unlike a lot of other publications.
Here is part of a "How To" article on automotive wiring, part of which covered diagnosing gas gauge problems. It's one of the best articles on the subject I have read. It's really good for folks use to more modern systems. In reading it you will see that there is some info missing, it's just background and finishing up items, the meat of getting to and fixing gas gauge problems is all there.

Do all fuel gauges have the resistor bridge ? 64 has a resistor built into the gauge itself ( round one on the back of the gauge). 65 has one that bridges the two contact screws on the back. I have pics of both if anyone has interest.
