Was a vacuum gauge an option on a 442 versus the tach? Just realized the one on my console is a vacuum gauge and not a tach.

I've been told the vacuum gage was a quick fix for some idlng issues they had with the cutlass and 442's. Not sure if that is correct? Regarding your original question...since they were on 64's and 65's they must have been an option, but not sure who would order them over a tach...but suppose some motor heads will tell the advanctages of having a vacuum gauge instead.

tachs were on the 442............. the vacuum gauge came on the other floor shift cars unless you ordered the tach.

No vacuum gage in 64 or 65. There wasnt a code for ordering a tach. The tach came with both consoles, regardless of 442 or Cutlass. If you ordered a console you got a tach.

Vac gage was used in 66. Console got the vac gage. If you wanted a tach you ordered the side mount unit or the late in the year rally pack. Rally Pack Side mount tach

Maybe, but that doesnt mean the Cutlass got em. The A body used the vac gage in 66.

Off topic but looking at the 66 interior the dash setup looks like it would fit in a 65. Anyone try it?

The vacuum gauge did not come out until 1966. All consoles in '65 (including B-bodies) came with a tach. All part of the console option.
Also, the '65 A-body manual shift consoles (and 4-spd B-body consoles) are different from the later years in that the insets on the top plates are gray, where later years are black.
