Since we tend to get a kick out of what some items are going for on ebay, maybe an ongoing thread of outrageously priced ebay items is in order... or maybe not.

Most people dont know that if its NOS that doesnt mean thats what GM used on the assembly line. Ive seen NOS 65 air cleaners and they are not what GM used in the factory. So I cant see spending all that cash for something like that.

OMG - I have one of those in my garage, exact same thing, came with car from my dad but it is only 28 years old (date coded 83). Should I lock it in a vault or e-bay it?

There is also NORS-new-old REPLACEMENT stock, which is what some of this crap is.What the dealer had to replace what the factory installed, not always the exact same thing, but a generic item, like the air cleaner or maybe even the backing plates.Just because it came from the dealer and the book said that was what fit, does not mean it left the factory with that exact same part. ---bil

It just clearly proves my point I have made for years, Chevy, in particular Camaro and Corvette guys, are idiots and crazy. There is no way an NOS, used on the factory line or otherwise, is worth that on any car. I often admire the "got to keep it stock — the way it was made guys", but I think they are clearly nuts. I won't pay nearly a grand for a paper and rubber item made to be thrown away. I'd rather spend that kind of cash on chrome and paint.

I just watched a dual snorkel 70 LS6 air cleaner hit $7450 last month. Just an FYI, that air cleaner is what you get if you do NOT hit the ZL2 box for Cowl Induction. My 70 454 Chevelle is a non ZL2 car but I think when the time comes I will just add repop Cowl Induction everything, which runs around $1300 with the hood. I have what is left of the original, maybe it can pay me back for something I want anyway. But not building a fart smelling, better than you 100 point resto. I am going to build an in your face 540 cube Nitrous drinking killer.

My dad just bought that entire setup for his '70 SS 402 El Camino from OPGI. Hasn't put it on yet. Good looking kit though with functional flapper thingy. I can understand some stuff, like the "elephant tusk" brake cooling tube for a '58 Corvette Big Brake car that they only made something like 800 of would go for a couple grand, but then you get into the insanity of a bolt that holds the fuel pump for $100 each because it has the correct stamp... Crazy to me!

Crazy to me! Outrageous to me is the guy who has to have a date coded set of gears in the ass end, the NOS timing chain, the new in the tude Muncie main shaft. People actually pay through the nose so thier picture album of the build shows overpriced shit you can't see. I sold a 3/67 3.31 GM gears, 12 bolt, for $966 on eGay. I found them at a garage sale up in stuart five years ago. Paid $20. The cosmoline woreoff years ago, leaving a nasty coating of surface rusty. But the guy had to have the dates, for whatever reason.

Actually I have found Chevelle guys to be much more reasonable, except the LS6 cars and the ZL1 (not sure), the 65 396 low production cars. It's really the Camaro and Corvette guys that are really nuts. I know a guy in my car club that is also into Corvettes, he paid big money for NOS cotter pins. Think about that for a minute, NOS cotter pins!
