Cannot find this anywhere... How much does a 400 short block weigh Too much to pick up by yourself without fucking your back up. That much I do know. Sorry no numerical number comes to mind.

This is a c/p seems a little high, my chev. iron headed 427 goes 682 with those massive heads, but I guess the olds w/ acc. and cast intake
Olds 400-455 620 (5) high deck w/accessories, no flywheel
If you need it real close i can weigh a couple heads and an intake, and you can subtract from above weight

Now that would not be fun...you would strain something and it would be my fault...would 450 be a good guess ? or would that be too heavy...I remember lifting up a bare 455 block a few inches before dropping it on my foot...so that was probably less than 250 unless Im stronger than I thin...

I`m not THAT old that I can`t lift a couple heads, intake w/ carb. I`ll do it tomorrow then deduct from dressed weight above. And if i do blow a ball, no big deal, mostly just look these days, not much action

Manifold & carb 65# heads @ 55# each Starter, dist, air cleaner, valve covers, pan 48# Don`t forget alt, valve train, attaching bolts & brackets, oil pump & stuff
So I guess if all this is right your looking at a little north of 200 #`s
Your estimate of 450 would be close on a skid
Hope this helped you some, good luck with your project

I was told BBO, dressed and wet 700#. I would guess 400#, for your short block.

You got it, unless you have a hilo in your back pocket the skid is a waist of wood.

Just a ray of sunshine, aren't you. I posted based on his question, prior to seeing your Godlike response. I suppose someone pretty much agreeing on your guesstimate was just to much for you. Get bent.

Scotty, You must be thinking about shipping it somewhere. I worked with a guy named Art from Freightcenter.com a couple of times. They are pretty good and got better prices than going direct. It was funny though, From New York to Los Angeles, one skid with a long block 400 cost $750. Adding a second shortblock 425 on a second skid dropped it to $550 total, and adding a third skid with a bunch of spare parts and accessories dropped it to around $475 total. go figure. I did save $ by not requiring a lift gate. At both ends the trucks that came out had lift gates anyhow. -grant

I actually thought about using these guys and got a real good quote...the longer I put it off the cheaper it got....but I checked references online and they got some pretty bad reviews...bills were a lot higher then the quotes...couldnt find anything good about them...

Hmm. My bill was same as my quote. I paid up front and that was the end of it. -grant

He kept going down trying to get me to sign on...It would have been a good deal but he mentioned possible adjustments once the shipment was shipped then I read the comments online. Of course you only get to see the complaints. Satisfied people rarely comment.
