Hey Folks: Hope everyone's holiday is going well! I like to buy vintage plates to either use or display on my 442 at shows. I have a copule different ones that I use, some from VA and some from CA where my car was built. I've done a good bit of research on the correct number range if my car had a CA tag issued to it in 1965 as well. I look on eBay all the time and a few of the tag collector sites. I saw this tag on eBay today and thought, man a great tag to have, but I'm not paying this guy's price, take a look; tinyurl.com/8fol5nIt is a pretty cool plate, but not for a grand! But how cool would it be to have a Very Ni Ce 442 plate?

Mine is March 65. NHA 259 is the original black plate. My 65 michigan plate starts with my initials.

I wonder if I can get that much for my matching set of black plates? That 442 engine must be a rare one!!

Nick, I caught that too, I usually correct them when I see that, but this time I wasn't going to touch it!
RAM Z, the info I got from all my research says your tag is right on the money. While the offical letter range for 1965 CA tags are; P-Q-R, any plate before that — even an A — could be correct because tags could have sat in a DMV office for some time before getting issued, however, anything after an R isn't.
I've got a plate that I use that starts with a Z, even though it couldn't have been issued in 65, doesn't mean a 1965 car that came to CA in late 69 or early 70 couldn't have had a Z plate issued to it. My CA display plate is ZFS-400; Z for the Fremont code and the 400 for the correct engine size. I have a 1965 VA plate for display; 442-561. But the actual registered tag is a personalized tag; 65 OLDS.

My black plate was stamped in 63. Dont know if they all were but thats the year stamped under my orange 65 registration tag. From what I understand, the first run of plates had the 63 stamped in them, but later runs did not. I don't know where the split is, but my Z plate does not the stamping and the U plate my car came with did not also.
