What's the best paint to use for the various engine brackets(alternator, power steering..etc)?

Semi-gloss black would be the most "technically" correct. I've had some good results by first stripping the bracket and priming with "hot-rod" black primer and then sanding and finishing with (believe it or not) Krylon Bar-b-que spray paint. A good trick I've learned is to heat the spray can pretty hot before spaying. Make sure the paint is thoroughly mixed and spray it while it still is hot. Three good coats should net you a presentable looking part.
