Switching from original starter to mini starter. Original had three posts for wire connection. New one has two. The battery power is straight forward. The other two - stack them on the remaining post?

i believe if you do that your starter will remain engaged.are you still running points in your distributor?

The original stater has an "S" terminal for the purple starter wire and an "R" resistor bypass for the ignition coil to provide full 12v to the points for easier starting. Mini starters are designed for electronic ignition systems that don't require that resistor bypass. As noted, simply connecting both wires to the S terminal will cause the starter to remain engaged after the engine starts. You need a diode kit.

Thank you both.
I have an MSD HEI distributor. Does that change the recommendation?

Thank you both. I have an MSD HEI distributor. Does that change the recommendation? It depends on how the distributor was wired when it was installed. If it uses the "R" terminal then yes you still need the diode.

Type "mini starter diode kit" into Google. Everyone sells them.
