It’s been awhile, but I recall sliding it back to get the nose out of the bell housing then bring the nose down towards the floor and you. 😁. Sometimes you have to rotate it a bit to get the solenoid past the block and exhaust.

If all else fAILS, Pull the bolt out of the motor mount on that side and jack the engine up a little.

I jacked up the motor on one side and it still isn't coming out,I'm wondering if its has anything to do that it was a automatic know its a 4 speed. know the starter is in a bell housing. I'm thinking all starters are the same aren't they.

There's no reason why it wont come out if you can get it over the cross member and manipulate the tail end down. If you still can't get it, take out the other side too. When you jack it up be sure the distributor doesn't hit the firewall or the fan against the radiator.

Seams like such a pain for a starter,I'll try both motor mounts do you think I need to unbolt the trans. to get it up that high, also i've tried to bring it down and i doesn't seam to want to twist that way only up.
