Hi all,
I also posted a similar post on Classic Oldsmobile, but figured I'd get more responses here.
Anyone know what determined which version axle came in which car, my Cutlass came with a Buick style or single horizontal rib per side axle, vs a Pontiac axle that has same horizontal ribs and a diagonal one on the passenger top. I seen a axle on Craigslist that says its from a 442 that is the type-P.
So was it all 442's got type-P or was it plant related or something else that determines what version you're car got?
Not related, but is there a way to post a picture from a file on your computer or phone as I only see a option looking for a url?
Regards,

The manual number (since it is broken into parts) and a page number will help him out a lot.

It went by axle ratios. Since the 442s highest gear was a 3.23, all 442s would have used a Type P axle. The cut off was a 3.08. Anything higher used the B axle.

Hi,
Pg: 4-5.1 drawing number: 386072
3.08 could be either based on the chart.
My Cutlass has a 3.08 and Type-B axle, so most should have a type-P in a 442, based on the chart and as long as the axle is original to the car.
