I'm having my car painted over the winter so all the trim is off. My bumpers are fine as is and I'll handle the stainless pieces separately. I want to get the pot metal trim re-chromed. What's a ball park price on what this could cost? I realize the price is dependent on the condition and my pieces are less pitted than anything I've seen on eBay recently but there is still varied degrees of pitting. I also realize a lot of chrome shops have closed due to the EPA so high prices are a fact. If anyone has gone through this recently I'm curious what was spent. Thanks

If there are any pits in the pot metal (and there are, be sure of it), the cost will be very high. The only way to fix pitted pot metal is to strip the chrome, hand grind each pit down to virgin metal, plate with copper, fill each pit by hand soldering, file, then replate with copper followed by the normal nickel and chrome. This process is extremely labor intensive, so expect it to be spendy. And yes, replating the textured rear panel will screw up the texture.

I had a shop in Chicago replate the textured rear panel and it looks 95% original. But be prepared to pay around $1,300.

The previous owner had all the pot metal redone and the tail panel looks good but it is all chrome. the special brushed look finished is now chrome.

Thanks for that info. What paint is used to get the brushed look back. I assume it to be some metallic silver but don’t know

Here's an update on my chrome adventure. The first shop I went too looked at my trim pieces and quoted $6,000 to do it all. He said it would take at least 8 weeks but followed up with that's minimum. I asked if he would get all the pitting out and his reply was no. I asked to see samples of pot metal they had done and he showed me a couple furniture knobs that weren't pot metal. Had a bad feeling, got out of there.
At the next shop I went too I first asked to see samples. He showed me pieces he was working on from a 57 Chevy and some finished Packard pieces. The Packard ones looked very nice. He quoted me $2,600 for my trim and 8 weeks. I asked about getting all the pits out and his response was he would try to get them all out but he would do the best job he could. The only pieces he was concerned about the pitting were the cross bars in the tail light housing but he said until they're stripped we won't know. I thought the price was fair and timing were fair and he took pride in his work so I went with him.
I saw the info on painting textured part of tail panel in Bro's site and plan on doing that.

The company is CMP (Courtesy Metal Polishing) in Villa Park, IL.
I'll post how it turns out.

I got the pieces back from chroming in the 8 weeks quoted. For the most part it was very good plating, not high end show quality but for the price it was very good. There was some confusion on the tail panel as to what area was going to get texture painted so I had to have him redo that piece. Also there was a blemish on the piece down the center of the hood I had him redo. These pieces added $400 to the price. Once redone I'm pleased with them. I did find another plater in the area after the fact that does show quality work but the price would have been in the $6,000 to $7,000 range minimum. For a car that's a driver I'm pleased with the results.

Don't know if anyone has done this, but a Blaster/Powder Coating guy I have used before told me he can do the pot metal in a Chrome like powder, (looks more like a polished aluminum to me) and fill the pits. He says they sand blast the pitts, then powder coat a heavy primer on it, which can be sanded flat filling the pitts, then coat over with the metallic finish. Anybody have experience with that? He showed me a sample hood ornament from 50's car, looked like old chrome that had dulled a little, but no pitts. I guess you would have to do the whole car to have it look uniform.

I've had good success by telling the plater NOT to touch the textured panels, then paint them using the paint on Bro's side and then clear coat. I've done at least three so far. I always started with pit free cores.
