So I switched to a manual box in my 64 cutlass. I got the box in and put in a redone rag joint but the gap seems excessive. Is there some adjustment I am not seeing to bring the column and box closer? The manual box is out of a 64 also Here is a cellphone pic  |

From what I remember, the whole column has to be loosened up and adjusted. The steel steering shaft can be pulled down but the steering wheel will stop it after about a quarter inch. Thats why everything needs to be loosened so you can move the steering rod. There is also a bearing on the steel shaft at the bottom of the bigger sleeve part of the column. Youll have to move that down so the sleeve can move down away from the steering wheel.
Or get some long bolts, and draw the upper part down to the rag joint. That may work, may not.

If you get longer bolts and pull it together than the steering wheel will bind towards the top. I would try loosening everything up first and see how far it moves.

I say loosen the 9/16" nuts under the dash and slide the whole steering column down. It can't be that far off.

Mine looks just like that. I loosened every thing and pushed it as far as I could and checked everything to the shop manual specs and it still isn't as far as it should be. The pin on the steering box yoke should engage the plate on the shaft so that if a rag joint fails on one side the steering will still work. I believe in my case the car has been hit in the past and moved the firewall back which creates a gap. I have considered adding a metal spacer to make it safe again but have yet to do so.

Well I loosened up here.  And it's now closer but I still think it should be closer than it is.  Is this lower mount a slip fit? Should I use a bit more force to push it down?  |

Where it goes thru the firewall there is a rubber gasket around the tube, inside that plate you see in the third pic with the 4 screws. That will give you some resistance.

Yep that was it, it didn't move easily so I wasn't sure but when you said there would be some resistance and that it was a rubber gasket....
I went back out , sat in the driver seat (which felt good ;D ) and gave it a few good thumps with both hands at the same time at 3 and 9 oclock on the wheel and it moved to where I needed it to go.

I have shifter linkage and gear selection indicator in dash that limits how far you can push the housing downward or forward. I followed the shop installation manual and checked all required dimensions and nailed them. I moved the shaft inside the tube some but I am still short by about 1/4 of an inch. |

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE SHAFT LENGTH OF THE STEERING BOX AGAINST THE ORIGINAL?
Is it from a 442? What's the casting number?

It has a factory leaking steering box no dought about that. Sorry it already has a 4 speed with a way better first gear and .70 ratio 4th gear than that boat anchor you are refering too.
