Guys I thought I knew these early A bodies well but apparently that's not the case. There is a rectangular hole in the firewall between the fuse panel and the parking brake and I cannot figure out what was there in the first place, have any ideas??

Is it the size of a domino? If so, this is the accessory grommet hole for routing the back-up lamp wiring on 3spd/4spd cars. The wire went through the firewall and was wire tied to the speedo cable. Then routed down to the tranny side cover where the back-up switch was mounted. The switch had different mounts depending on whether equipped with 3 or 4 speed.

Just to clarify, the holes were rectangular or round depending on whether car had A/C. Don't ask me why. Round holes were found on non-A/C cars. Other wires passing through this hole include but are not limited to: brown wire from tachometer to coil, power top red wire to circuit breaker...same for power glass on the wagon.

I would prefer to have the round hole....I imagine it's easier to find the correct size round grommet. Admittedly, I've never looked for rectangular grommets, but I'm sure someone will chime it with a reference if they exist.

That round grommet has two separate holes one or both of them are hooded. I save all of them that I can, they arent repro'ed.
