No its not a rare option, i like using unused factory parts of the car for other things, my key hole is a shift light, the cigar lighter is the manual choke and the clock blank has been converted into a vacuum gauge. Fun and easy project!

I like that idea. basically equivalent to the mpg reading of newer cars. Does it help you keep your foot out of the gas?

Its a no name gauge i picked up at a swap meet, the new ones are sold as vacuum/boost.gauges and show positive boost pressure. The higher the vacuum reading the batter the mileage but i use it mostly to tune the motor, i dont use a timing light i adjust the timing up until it pings a little then back it down, use an adjustable vacuum advance as well, tthen i tune the carb for highest vacuum readings. To me its as vital as water temp, oil pressure and amps.

This trick would work for any simple gauge, if you dont want under the dash gauges, you could use an oil pressure gauge. Look for a gauge with two screws the hold the face on and generic gauges often dont have a logo.
