Did you have to put longer studs in for the rocker arm and did you need the tall valve covers to clear them ?

I don't think the studs were longer, however the new studs don't have the built in "nut" at the base like the stock ones did. That raised nut portion of the stock stud interferes with the rocker arm pivot. Rocket Racing offers this combination of parts for the SBO "number 2" heads, and the BBO "A" heads. I guess those are the two versions that have a 3/8" stud from the factory. You do not need to use the tall valve covers to clear the rocker arms. Here is a link to the Rocket racing webpage that has this valve train upgrade. As you can see, it says "no machining is necessary and fits under stock valve covers" www.rocketracingperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=489_480&products_id=2130&osCsid=h9aeob6nhume06hkbfn8sqq035

What's the height on those valve covers? Are they still available new, or do you have to find them on the secondary market?

I think the valve covers are 5" tall. They really make the motor look "bigger". They are no longer available "New", I found this set on eBay. I have ordered a set of valve covers from Rocket Racing also, since I like to change things up once in a while. Putting on a different set of valve covers and swapping out an air cleaner alters the entire look of an engine. I like to see if anyone notices the difference from one style to the other.

The motor looks great and the valve covers make the motor look even better. Thanks for the information on the rocket racing valve train upgrade package. I ended up finding 3/8 studs (very difficult to find , roller rockers, and pushrods seperatley for my 65 A Heads which took a little more time, effort, and probably money. The kit would have been an easier solution if I knew it was out there. Also had to increase the clearance for push rods to get the correct fit and valve train geometry.

Glad I saw the pictures of your car. I have an F85 emblem that I had no idea what it was for but I see one just like it on your front fender. Very nice car and you are putting in a great looking engine and front end setup.

Making some changes to my ride before summer gets here. I pulled the motor out (again) and added a new camshaft, springs and lifters. Something to add a little more lump, lump to it. I had an OL4B intake manifold polished along with some Rocket Racing valve covers. I also found a nice billet alternator mount and some other cool stuff that I didn't know were even available for Olds motors. Trying to make my Olds stand out a little bit more. I liked the subtle grey/cast aluminum look it had, but I wanted it to have some more shiny stuff. I switched out the Jetaway for a T350 and used the shifter conversion from Shiftworks to retain my factory shifter. Biggest change expense wise is a new Ford 9" rear end from Quick Performance. I went with a 3.25 gear and a 31 spline Eaton posi. Its going to be 3/4" narrower on each side to allow for some bigger tires and wheels. I'm going to try a set of 18" x 8" and 18" x 9.5" Ridler 645 wheels with some 275/45/18 tires out back. I still like the 15" Olds style SSI's that I have now, and I probably better keep them around just in case... I also made a "custom" dash insert with Auto Meter gauges similar to the one I did before in my other build on the "members rides" forum. w29.boards.net/thread/1019/ricks-1965-cutlass-build As you can tell, I like to modify my cars. If I had a real 65 442 I would still want to mess with it, so its probably good that mine is just an F85 with 442 badges. Next in line for this thing will be a built Big Block Olds! P.S - Ram Z. I took your Dad's advice. I removed the F85 front fender emblems, had the holes filled and the fenders paint matched (I hope it matches!)

Do the KOOKS fit without modification? Yes they fit perfectly with no modifications at all. No hammer whacks or dimples needed.

A member of the classicoldsmobile.com forum that goes by the name cutlass.efi (Mark Remmell) got a cam/springs/lifters kit for me from Erson Cams. He says its an old "Viking 100" grind. There aren't many choices for the 45 degree CBA Olds motors, but he said I would be able to hear the difference. I told him the 330 ran great, so quiet and smooth that no one even turned their heads when it idled by. It honestly sounded like a quiet sewing machine even with the headers and dual exhaust. I'm hoping it has at least a rumble to it now. Even though I just had the heads freshened last year, I removed them again so the machine shop could set up the new valve springs. If you want to know the cam specs I will get out the cam card and post them. I can't remember them off the top of my head. At the rate I'm going I'm still two months away from starting the car and finding out how it sounds. I'm working 7 days a week and every bit of overtime my employer can offer me. It makes for extra money for car stuff, but leaves me no time or energy to work on it...
