This is interesting to me. I bought my 65-442 new (ordered it) and it also had a vibration that could not be fixed. It would start around 60 MPH and last until 100 MPH. I mean a vibration you could feel, in the wheels, seats, floor etc. Then at 100 MPH it just stopped (the vibration) it got as smooth as could be. I changed everything I could think of, drive shaft, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, pilot bearing. The car still had the vibration when I sold it........... Gary

Gary Gary, mine reacted the exact same way. It was most noticeable in the shifter handle and always between 60 and 100 mph. I had the same effect of running perfectly smooth once you went over 100mph. When I won the race and let off it, would start the violent shifter vibration again and didn't quit until it went below 60 mph. It never broke and it never quit!

Guess what guys my 63 Corvette had the same situation and guess what? The crank was out of round. My 63 has a 65 crank it and problem was solved. Just my 2 cents.

This couldn't have been the crank, it was a standard shift (4 speed) and like BRO said you put the car in nutural and let it coast down in speed and once it went under 60 it was ok again. With the car in nutural the engine was at idle. Its good to know I wasn't the only one ............ its bad to know nobdy knows why or how to fix it. By the way my Automatic vert doesn't do it at all ?? Gary

I had a customer with a '65 Cutlass, 455, T-400. He complained of a vibration after a rear end swap. We had the driveshaft balanced, high speed balanced the rear wheels on the car and finally checked the pinion angle. Pinion wasn't down enough; so we welded a large washer on either side of the upper control arms, and moved the hole forward slightly. Problem solved.

It must just be a 65 cutlass thing. My car starts vibrating just under 70 to about 73. It did this with the original drive train & suspension. It still does it and every thing including engine trans suspension & drive shaft has been up graded. The rear end housing is the only part that remains oem.

my car does the same thing, shifter knob rattles like a bastard, helps to unscrew it a bit, i actualy thought it was the clutch or pilot bearing

It sounds like a pinion angle to me. The other thing I have found, the pinion yoke is off center.the flange on the dif. that the rear u-joint bolts to. The u- joint is not centered on the yoke. If you put a dial indicator on the drive shaft,at the rear most point you can, you may find it out of round. It may not be much, but times that to high speed. That's why you don't feel it until higher speed.
