I noticed on RamZ car that the Gold Stripe location( drive line) is closer to the transmission than it is to the Differential. My question is, when I prepped and sanded mine, I noticed that my Brown/ Gold stripe is on the opposite end. That is, closer to the differential. My car is a 66 4 speed and according to the assembly manual, the stripe is brown but it dose not indicate exactly where to put the stripe. Dose anyone have any knowledge of this? Todd

Not me, I kinda guessed on where to put it. Ive seen some since in the middle and in the same spot as mine. I doubt there was a right place to put it, just as long as it was there.

Yours turned out sweet too by the way. I don't think it matters where either. I saw a few areas on the shaft where it looked like the stripe could go but it turned out to be where the shaft must of rubbed on the underside as it may have hit a speed bump or two.
Thanks RamZ,...Todd

don't take this wrong, but I have seen driveshafts put in backwards on some pics. there are also some running the driveshafts with the rubber insulator insert. 442 didn't have them.

The rubber insert deal, I don't think thats a fact, too many have them as well as don't. The vert had a solid, the fremont has the insert. You just don't know with olds what they came with.

The heavy duty driveshaft in all 442 literature was one piece 3.5" diameter. Now as far as Fremont.... who knows..... they pushed out all GM A bodies, one after another and in no particular order. If for that reason they didn't receive the heavy duty driveshaft, then I'm afraid I'll have to concider them all CLONES built by GM. So, since you're looking for another project RamZ, I suggest you buy a Lansing built 442 and start over on a real 442. Have a nice day

Why you pickin' on poor little ol' me jeffy.........................if you're down and need a hug, just call on one of your Michy buddies with long arms,........I'm sure that will help to calm down that Sasquatick temper tantrum you're having. Don't you know that you are supposed to respect your elders, not abuse them? Was I pickin' on you? Boy....... you sure go to bat for your little brother, when he gets picked on.

Guys,
The 442 auto cars have the rubber insert, as did all auto cars. The manual trans cars have the solid shaft. My auto trans shaft has the visable marking on the shaft approx 1/3 from the transmission end. The 4 speed shaft was too rusted to see the paint band.

Both of mine are 4 speed cars, one is solid and one has the rubber insert, god only knows what the boys on the assembly line put on the cars as they rolled on down, even if the book says it should be solid and yours is not, doesn't mean it didn't come that way.

That doesn't mean anything, be depressed about the economy, work on your car, one piece, two piece, as long as it isn't two pieces laying on the asphalt, all is good.

Nice pics. Now youve got the third driveshaft, not the bigger HD unit nor the two piece unit. Yours is the one piece, small diameter shaft.

Cool Pics. In my 66 assembly manual, it shows a brown stripe for the 4S SM (M21) trans. But, like I said in the beginning of this topic, it dose not show where to put it. Looks like it doesn't matter according to this thread. I'm going to lay it down where I saw the old one.
