I am new to the board... and think this is a great idea!!! I have had my 65 Olds for 19 years now. I am in the process of "restoring it" for the 2nd time. I have a question regarding the wiper motor. I have a 2 speed motor that looks like a cylinder shape. Most GM A bodies I have seen have this one. I have also seen the one that is more rectangular shaped.
I am looking for a replacment and am not too concerned with factory correct, but rather interchangeability. Which one will work from year to year and from other GM cars? (ie, Chevelle, GTO, Buick, ect)

Id say that they all would bolt on the car, but you would have to make sure your harness will hook up to it. The square one in 65 did not have a washer pump and was only one speed. The big one with the cylinder hanging off the one side is the two speed/washer one. In 67 they had a square one with the pump. So youve got a lot of choices.
The 65 square unit had a cheaper wiper transmission. One piece was stamped and the other piece was round stock. The two speed has both arms round, for strength I guess.

I have experienced a non-operating wiper/washer at times, everytime I tried to determine the cause, the wipers would start to work again.....yeah. Finally I took the unit completely off the car, sitting at a table and a 12 volt source, I operated the wipers as in accordance to bench checking process written in the manuals. What I found was....the park unit, has points. These points are the key to everything. Also, on the points, mounted into a very little slot is a piece of plastic that isolated the metal bar that breaks the points. If that falls out, nothing works properly. Mine fell out, I glued it back in place and everything is working just like it is susposed to. Also, there is a grounding wire that gets sandwich between the wire connector and the body of the wiper motor housing. The one mounting screw for the washer has a brass strip under it, make sure it is there and is properly installed. this makes the ground. This needs to be clean and a good positive contact. I would think that unless you have actually Burned the Motor, I would think you can get it to work again by cleaning and checking to make sure all of the little pieces are where they should be in the PARK mechanism.
Frustration can be a Teacher
