it was actually a clear maroon read the resto tips page under pain tips.
This is a tricky one. Oldsmobile created this funny clear maroon
paint (scarlet) that is hard to duplicate unless you have the paint code and
I have never been able to find the code. I have replicated it two ways.
1) Get some clear Maroon tint from the paint store and mix it with clear. I
use PPG Deltron and mixed it with DAU and DT reducer
2) Use Dykem Red machinst layout dye and spray it on (aerosol can) or carefully appy a couple coats (bottle) with a modeling brush. If you use the Dykem (ethanol based) it is not very durable so it is best mixed with Clear to keep it from fading or you will have to freshen it up every two years.
P.S. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to repaint Olds rockets but, the fact that you're here, just proved me wrong.

Yep... read through all that. And Testors doesn't have a "clear maroon tint" color. And yes I understand that your tips page doesn't offer any advise that would point one to use model paint.
It was suggested on the forum that I try model paint, and that caught my eye. So I thought I'd see if anyone had done that with satisfactory results, and if so, what color they used.
Now if they do have a "clear maroon tint" or a "Dykem Red machinist layout dye" color, that would be freakin' awesome!

The Testors paints are what Z use to restored the 442 emblems and speedo needles. The maroon tint in the clear is regular automotive paint. The Dykem Red machinist layout dye is exactly that. The whole idea here is, that it was semi transparent and not a solid color. You could still see the chrome through it.
