I asked once before, but the # of members has more than doubled since. Anyone have an original steering wheel in decent shape?
Thanx,

I asked once before, but the # of members has more than doubled since. Anyone have an original steering wheel in decent shape? Ralph: I think "original steering wheel" and "in decent shape" just don't go together. I've been — buying, working on, restoring, collecting, 65 Cutlass/442 cars and parts since 1978 and I have never run across a decent steering wheel. They all seem to have the same cracks and same problems to one degree or another. I've never found one that I would rather have over another. And I think they chance of one of us 65 lovers finding two — one to keep, one to sell — is pretty small, but you never know with this group. I've just given up and I'm either going to do one myself, or bite the bullet and send one out to be reconditioned. I want a Custom Deluxe wheel for my 442, I like the way the look. Some look better than others depending on the interior color combo. I think the CD wheel looks great with a black, blue, or green interior, but the CD wheel in a red interior looks funny to me. Before my old computer crashed I had the contact info for a guy who could make a CD wheel out of a regular deluxe wheel and they look real good. He can also make a complete faux woodgrain wheel which wasn’t even an option until 68. His name was Bill and I think he was in Kentucky or Tennessee if I remember correctly, but I have since lost all his contact info. Good luck,

Kochs Steering wheel restoration. They have the mold to recast the 64-66 wheel. It cost 395 bucks the last time I checked. Thats a bargain compared to the last NOS one that sold on eBay. Someone on the old 65 442 mailing list had them do a wheel. He said it came back better than new. When I get some extra money Im going to send them a wheel to redo. www.kochssteeringwheels.com/productcart/pc/viewCat_P.asp?idCategory=2

They have the mold to make new ones? Oh man, I'm there! Thanks for the info! I have some $ set aside to redo my wheel, I put a little away every birthday just for something special for my 442. I'll let you know any price updates. I have a question for anyone that has a Lucerne Mist interior, has anybody had their wheel restored? The reason I ask is the original blue that was on the steering wheel was not a metallic color, the color was just a solid light blue. At least not from all the LM interiors I've seen, all 4 of my 65's are in LM and look that way. The wheel from my Cutlass SP is in the best shape of all my cars and is clearly not metallic. However, all the LM wheels I've seen restored are metallic colored. Does anybody have any experience with the proper color?

I have never seen an original metalic wheel on a 65. Like yours, they are all a solid light blue that didn't come close to matching the interior color.

68s were a Corvette teak style, three spoke, all faux wood.

The restorer — who's contact info I lost — could restore a 65 steering to be ALL faux woodgrain. Actually, he could do that to any steering wheel.

The price is still the same, they quoted me $400, however, they can't do the faux woodgrain at all. So I guess I will have to go with just my Deluxe wheel.

I can always spot a restored wheel buy the metalic paint on a Lucerne Mist car. Do anywhere in your files have the color code for the steering wheels? Koch's said they would need a color code for the best match, or a sample. I can give them a sample, but with age the color changes and I would prefer a color code.

What you & Scotty are saying is that at best I have a 'Vette wheel & virtually no chance of getting hold of an original wheel. OR, does anyone have an extra that koch can restore? Anyway, at least if I can get one, at least I now know where I can go to get it restored. PLEASE someone say they have one that I can get & have it restored!!!! Ralph

If you want a funky, cracked, wheel that needs restoration, that shouldn't be a problem, you can probably get 2 or 3 from this list. But if you want a bolt on ready to use, then you are probably be out of luck. I personally don't have any extra steering wheels I can let go. If I end up parting out my Cutlass vert, then maybe I would have a core wheel to sell, but not a “driver”.

I kwow he has some wheels, I saw the columns they are attached to. Ill email him and ask what he wants for a core. Its not going to be a nice wheel but one to send out and have redone.

I just spoke to a guy in the local NY / LI Olds club with a 65 Vert. He had a fellow located in PA take a standard wheel and create a deluxe wood simulated wheel. It was some time back and is checking fior the fellow's name. I have a picture of the fabricated wheel, it looks great and also a picture of an orginal deluxe wheel that I have. I'll try to send them to the forum later in the week when I get back in town.

Hey!!! Thanx 4 all the input! Right now what I'm thinking is that I won't be able to get a decent one, so I'm looking for a black one like the one Jasen describes & shows on his web page. He also said he restored it himself w/ a "POR 15 kit". @ Jasen: Can you help w/ info? If not, here's what I'm going for: www.ultra-high-compression.com/page11-10.jpgIn short, the questions I've been asking are to make sure I have all the info & parts so the car looks original except for the "speed goodies". In other words, I'm trying for the best of both worlds- at least as much as possible. Thanx, Ralph
