Wow. Both cars look great. I don't remember ever seeing a '61 in person until the GNRS this year but I love them. Snapped a quick photo of this one. Can you share a little more about your tire / wheel size on the '65? Before you took it apart did it have lowered springs? What size are the tires in the front? Did you have those 275/60s under it before you took it apart? (I'm trying to figure out what I need for my car to get the look I want) Thanks, Grant

Thanks Grant! The tire and wheel combo on my 65 were on it before I put the air ride equipped frame under it. It had stock coil springs on the rear and lowered springs on the front from Global West. I used the ones for a 64-67 GM "A" body with a small block, part # S-13. They recommend using Big Block springs in all Oldsmobile's, but since I was using Edelbrock Aluminum heads, an aluminum intake, headers instead of exhaust manifolds and had relocated the battery to the trunk, I figured the front end was quite a bit lighter then it was to begin with. It ended up sitting real nice and rode good too. When I bought this car it had a 454 BBC motor in it and had a real sleeper look to it because the previous owner had some custom built 15" x 7" steel wheels with 5" of backspacing made up and the 275/60/15 tires tucked right up in the rear wheel house. He had even welded in the lip off a 14" wheel so that the stock Olds hubcaps would still snap onto the wheel. The car had 14" x"6" wheels on the front. I really liked the look! When I upgraded to disc brakes on the front, those front wheels no longer fit. I wanted to come up with a wheel that still had kind of a stock look to it. After much measuring and re-measuring, I figured out that a 15" x 8 1/2" wheel with 5 1/2" of backspacing should still fit with the 275/60/15 tire. The guys at Specialty Wheels Ltd. made up the SSI wheels for me and I bought a set of 15" x 7" with 4" backspacing wheels from them for the front. I use a 225/60/15 tire on the front of the car.
I still have those 15" x 7" steel wheels that the 14" hubcaps will snap onto if someone wants to go with that "sleeper" look, and still have some big tires out back! I sometimes wish I had found a disc brake set up that would allow the use of 14" wheels on the front, or maybe I could get some 15" wheels and have that 14" lip welded in there so I could still run the stock Olds hubcaps on my car!

Just to be clear, those backspacing numbers are with that 9" rear right? If so, they wouldn't transfer over to a stock rear-end, but it's good to know you can get that large or a rear wheel in there. I may go the 15x8 steel wheel route in the back with a 15x7 in the front. not sure yet. Thanks for the info.

The 15" x 7" w/5" BS wheels and 275/60/15 tires were originally on the car with the stock 10 Bolt rear end. I blew that rear end up (it had a mini-spool) and bought the 9" Ford from Moser. The Ford 9" measures the same exact width from drum to drum as the 10 Bolt unit I took out, so I believe the 15" x 8 1/2" SSI's w/5 1/2" BS would still fit on a stock rear end.
