What is meant by the term QUENCH?......how is it measured and what needs to be done to increase or decrease?

"quench" refers to how far below the deck the top of the piston is at tdc. my stock 455 bottom has about .035" of quench. a zero deck motor refers to when the piston is flsuh with the deck of the block. this is completely different than just decking the heads, as all this does is make the combustion chambers smaller and bumps the compression.
i was told you want about .040" from bottom of the head to the top of the piston with a bbo. so for example, using my stock 455 with .035" quench and if i were to run a .040" thick head gasket, my piston would be .075" away from the bottom of the head. this means if i want to run a thick head gasket i would need to zero deck the block. this is why you see guys running these .025" thick copper head gaskets, so they dont have to zero deck the block. with .025" of head gasket, you would want the piston about .015" in the hole.
how you achieve this is math, and having your block milled. supposedly you will make more power with the proper quench distance, and that must be true, because just like degreeing the cam and the odd cycle 4-7 swaps (if leagal), all of the top dollar racing engine builders pay attention to this.
words of the wise: make sure to check p2v clearance when doing stuff like this... hope i answered you question.
