How can one tell the difference between a the stock 65 442 olds 10 bolt rear and a chevy. Are there any external differences in they way they look, or are the differences internal only?
Currently have no access to look for the stamped markings.

Thanks Bro - I am having the rear gears replaced and the shop is telling me the rear, which looks just like the Olds photo you provided, is a chevy rear. They are basing this not on the housing, but the gears inside. I'll be meeting with them again on Monday.

I don't see how it would matter as long as the gears fit correctly. It is the correct look.

Wasn't there a difference in axle thickness?

Hi,
The Chevy 8.2 has is weaker, pinion bearing or spline sizes and as mentioned axle shaft size and design as they are C-clipped
The Oldsmobile 8.2 was actually a Buick design bolt in axles the Pontiac version of this axle is a little stronger as they had extra webs cast that ran from the upper mounts to the pinion
