have just a general question...in the past I have used utility knifes, small wire cutters and razor blades with some success...anybody make a tool specifically for cutting open taped wire looms...getting ready to do an alternator upgrade and want to replace alt to battery cable with new and larger size cable...cant seem to find any tool on line
thanks for any suggestions

Roofers use an olfa blade with a hook on the end that may help, or some medical scissors are blunt for cutting bandages

Stan,
thanks for the response...I know of the tool you are speaking of...
since I posted earlier I stumbled on a video of someone doing exactly what I will be doing and he used a sewing seem ripper...use the one your wife has if she is a sewer (good luck there)or or buy one at a sewing supply for around 10 bucks...worked really well in the video...even has a small bead so when you insert it into the wire loom it wont damage the wires...seemed to work well...at least worth a try...

You can get a tool at HD that is used to cut through the outer layer of insulation on home wiring without cutting the inner layers. Works really well for home wiring, not sure if it will work in your application, might be worth a look.

The stock harness wrap is not adhesive. It's just plastic tape wound over the harness and tied at the ends. Once you loosen one end, it just unwraps.

thanks Joe,
Just watched a Painless Wiring video and they explained just as you did that the tape used is non adhesive and just tied at the ends...just got my seem ripper this am along with a couple of other tools I needed so will keep it handy just in case...
thanks again.

Just a follow up on the seem ripper...have used it twice so far on areas of the wire loom that someone had repaired before me and had used regular electrical tape and areas of the original loom that were stuck with age...the seem ripper sliced right through with no trouble, worked really slick...so far happy with the $6.00 tool

I'll add that a rag dampened with lacquer thinner is the way to get that sticky ooze off of the wires.

A cheap letter opener is available in office supply stores that has a long narrow point leading up to a "V" with a razor blade in the "V". It will work on thin stuff, not braided sheath. Sometimes companies give them away as promo items with ads printed on them. The plastic point isn't hard enough to cut the wire's insulation.
