question...anybody here ever use Shift Works kit KK02 to upgrade from a switch pitch to T400 or 200R4...suppose to allow you to be able to keep your column shifter...they also make a new decal for your PRNDL...

I'm struggling to see how that kit helps. The stock linkage will operate the trans just fine. The problem is that the shift gate in the column only has notches for D and L. This kit doesn't change that.

Hi Dennis
Here is how we have it set up in our 64 Chevelle column.
The gate in the 64 and 66 is at the end of the steering column in the engine compartment.
P is where park is
now remember the gears will come quicker to fit in the space.
R and then N are next
OD and D are in the former N-D Gate. So once in OD you can just pull into D (3rd) and back to OD (4th) and there are stops at bot ends.
2 and 1 are both available.
Thats how it is set up in our 64
Joe...this was the response I got...granted this is for 66 SS but was assuming it would be similar for the olds...I have since asked whether the same would apply to a 65 Olds 442 and have not yet received an answere back from them...will post their response once I get one...

The steering columns are the same, as are the gates for the shifter. The only thing I see is that the arm on the trans has a slot so you can adjust the radius (and thus the angular rotation of the selector shaft to engage each gear. The problem I have with that is that GM typically used the same angular rotation for the steps from R to N to D to L. Changing the length of the arm on the trans also changes the angular rotation for moving from P to R. Does this mean that you aren't engaging reverse fully? Or worse, you aren't engaging park fully?
I have no experience with the column shifters, but the Shiftworks kit to convert a dual gate to a four speed shifter is pretty poorly designed. You only have so much throw from PARK to LOW, and you have to squeeze an additional stop in there.

I'll also add that you can get the same effect for free if you slot the hole in the arm on the stock equalizer shaft that runs from the LH frame rail to the trans. Reducing this lever arm reduces the amount the column shifter moves to reach a given gear. That should open up the additional stop in the pattern. Still won't line up with the notches in the gate in the column, however.

this is probably a dumb question but is there anyway to modify or change the gate itself to work?....

Sure, but you have to completely disassemble the steering column and file the gate to look like the one in a four speed OD column.
