What is the diameter of the air cleaner top that you are trying to match? I'm on the East coast, near Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks, Bob. I just read you're other post. I'll check to see if I have one that is 18.5".

The actual diameter of the chrome top is 17.5 inches. the outer diameter of the base is a hair over 18". I guess I could also use a 4GC base and modify the opening, but I don't want to cut up and modify my only stock base in case I want to go back to the 4 GC later. I am going to try a different 4 barrel but want the engine to look outwardly stock. If you have one PM your number and I'll call you. Thanks. Chris.

I had a similar issue when I first bought my 65 442 vert....the original owner had switched from the 4GC to a Carter AFB and had added an electric fuel pump...musta had some vapor lock issues...anyway long story short the air cleaner base didn't fit the AFB air horn correctly...AFB air horn way larger diameter than the opening in the stock air cleaner base so my wife's cousin, who is our mechanic for things I cant do, cranked out an adapter out of a piece of aluminum bar stock on his lathe which perfectly adapted the two...has gaskets top and bottom for good seal...it is about 3/4 to an inch high and allows me to use the stock air cleaner...fits neatly under the air cleaner...no fitment or clearance issues...might be something to investigate...just a thought...

I have what I believe is a stock 65 Olds Cutlass air cleaner. It was on my 65 Cutlass with a 455 and a Qjet. If interested send me your email and I will send a picture of it. I live in Port Orange near Daytona FL.

Thanks. I thought about that, but don't have access to a lathe any more. Plenty of adapters for sale cheap to go the other way, from small carb to big air cleaner, but not what I need. I may have to resort to that. Unfortunately, this is an affluent town with rich older bikers and hot rodders. Machine shops around here take advantage of that and charge and arm and a leg for their work. I can work with sheet metal modifications on my own.

I just checked the dimensions and forget it. It fits the Qjet but is only 14" across the top and only slightly larger at the base.
Sorry can't help, John

if you can't find a base to fit your cleaner and decide to go the adapter route I can send you a photo of what worked for me if you think that might help...

is 17.5 the diameter of the filter element?it seems to me the element diameter is the critical dimension of the base other than the opening for the carb
