"Rub" where? What size wheels? What size tires?
The correct thing to worry about is offset, not backspace. Backspace depends on wheel width, offset is independent. You want near zero offset.

I removed "big and little" torque thrust wheels from my 65, and put new OEM style 15" x 7" steel rims from Wheel Vintiques on the car with BFG Redline radials, 225/70 R15. The wheels are 4.25 inch backspace. Wheel Vintiques lists them as an OEM replacement for the 65 GTO. My car sits a little low because there are over 100,000 miles on the springs, and the only rub I get is when backing out of a steep driveway with the wheels turned hard right, the left front rubs the fender. I believe that it would not rub at proper ride height. I had the same combo on a previous 65 with Corvette 15 x 7 Rally Wheels, same tire size, no problems. The improvement in ride quality and handling was amazing!

Just thought of something else: The stock wheel/tire diameter for our cars was 27". You should be able to use any combination of rim size and tire size that results in that diameter with no more than 4.25 backspace. If you want to run 60's for the look, you might need 16" rims. Tire size comparison charts are available online for free from several sources. Good Luck.

for whatever help it may be I had put later model chrome 15x7 SSIII wheels with 225/60/15 tires up front and 255/60/15 tires out back. the backspacing is 4 inches and I have plenty of room in the rear the fronts rub the top of the wheel well because the car has a massive amount of spring droop that will soon be fixed and I too still have drums all around.
