Looking for tips on installing the distributor in the new 400 so it is close to the correct position for the initial start up. The #1 piston is currently at TDC.
Thanks

i usually stick my finger in #1 plug hole, and mark where the rotor points when you get a blast(compression stroke). thats where i put #1 plug wire, carry on from there

Since you've already determined that the engine is at TDC compression, figure out where you want the #1 spark plug wire to be (which cap socket/terminal) and how you want it clocked (#1 to the back, front, toward the throttle linkage). Then drop the distributor in so that the rotor is basically pointing toward where you want #1 to be. You then need to adjust the rotation of the distributor to the point where the points/magnetic trigger break their connection (this is when the coil gets the signal to fire). Then if you want to try to get it closer to it's final adjustment, rotate the crankshaft counter-clockwise until your timing mark aligns with whatever base timing you plan to run the engine at (like 15 degrees bTDC for example). Then rotate the distributer to realign the #1 terminal with where the rotor currently points. And you'll need to double check that at this new spot the points/magnetic trigger are just breaking their connection.
This will get you as close as possible to having your distributor set where you'll want to run it. It's a bit more tedious... so you might just want to get it in the ball park with the first couple steps, fire it up, then have the timing light handy to make the final adjustment.
