I search this site but didn't find out how to identify the correct tach wire when using hei. Once that is determined I'm guessing you just splice into it or create a 2 to 1 electrical connection? The tach I want to use is the stock one that comes with the console. I don't know if it works but want to hook it up to find out.

Um... Have you looked at your HEI cap? You can buy the correct plastic connector body to snap into the cap. Simply connect the tach feed wire to the TACH terminal on the cap. This mimics the same pulses as the tach would see on the original coil.

Joe,
Thanks for your help. I did look at the numerous wires at the distributor I never looked closely at the cap. It does show "tach". I tried to attached a photo showing two wires into a single connector plugged into the tach post. One wire looks like brown and the other is yellow or yellow and some other color. It is hard to tell. Since the auto console, and I assume it had a tach, are long gone, what are these wires for and how do I determine which can be tapped into for a tach? I can email a photo but not attach one here. It claims file is too big. thanks for all your help, john

I took another look at the cap and now I'm thinking the two wires are not plugged into the tach post but are in the batt post. Am I correct in assuming there are two post side by side. The one on the right is for batt and the one next to it on the left is for a tach? I can't see under the cap to verify that there are two post. I don't know a lot about auto electricity but am willing to learn in order to fix my car.

John,
You'll need to trace those wires - it's hard to know what they are since the HEI was added by someone. The original coil would have had a yellow and black or brown wire going to the + side of the coil. The yellow would have been the bypass wire that provides a full 12V to the coil with the key in START. The other would be the resistor wire that knocks it down to about 9V with the key in RUN. If that's what these are, they should be connected to the BATT terminal on the HEI. If they are something else, who knows. Send photos to my email.

Joe,
I sent you an email with a picture. It is not a great picture though.

Hooked up tach today and seems to work fine. Surprised that a tach this old would still work.
Thanks Joe for your help,
john
