Should not this screen have a larger opening? As far as I can see - this opening is so small - it will constantly get clogged, no? This appears to be something like the woven wire mesh cloth seen here - www.bwire.com - like the 100 x 100 mesh? There are 100 wires per inch about I would say? Is this something worth downgrading - getting a larger opening and less surface area of the wire mesh? Lets say something like 50 wires per inch? I just think that with this filter, there is too much mesh, and not enough opening size. Needs more flow in able to avoid getting constantly clogged, and bypassed.

As I mentioned earlier, your 51049 filter should be fine. On diesels I always use 51258. I think the canister is heavier, and the sealing ring is thicker. The 51258 is about an inch shorter which aids in any distortion, same diameter. The 51258 has a anti drain back valve, but in this application isn`t necessary, and wont matter. I find it hard to believe that if your adapter is not cracked, warped, or porous, that it would leak because of pressure seepage thru the seal. I wish I could be of more help, but this is all I got
I dread going back and reading all this, probably all F*&%ed up

You gotta admit dave, jabbin at a poor scmuck as myself is kinda fun. I pulled out assembly and found two (2) pieces of what appears to either be gasket or overly hardened gasket silicone. Maybe the culprit since i can push the pressure relief valve much further in now. I will see tomorrow.

Wouldnt that defeat the purpose of a pressure release valve then.?

Even BOLD LETTERS didn`t help it seems If it were my engine I`d remove the valve assembly, get it clean. Any particles left in there go directly in your lube system. I posted so many pictures I flipped to page 2

On the valve you will see four indentations, you need to work those out with a pick. Me i used a steel dental pick, and tiny standard screwdriver, takes some effort. To reassemble i used a metal punch letter i. Reassembling sucked, kept popping, my new indentations. I ended up putting 6 punch marks to be on the safe side.
