So my car is running and driving. I have tail lights, turn signals but no brake lights. All fuses are good except for wiper fuse. Im terrible when it comes to auto electrical. Home elec im all day on but this is most likely some sort of relay im guessing. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the switch at the pedal?

Your brake lights run through the turn signal switch. It could be an issue with the T/S switch. If you have power coming out of the brake light switch when you hit the brakes, but not coming out of the T/S, then it's the T/S. Just look at that wiring diagram someone posted to trace the wires and grab a test light.

Also check or replace the bulbs in back, should be an 1157 bulb. I have seen both brake light bulbs burnt out. On my car I lost power going to the brake switch right above the pedal. I ran a separate hot wire to the brake switch. Good luck .Bassinguy

Home elec im all day on but this is most likely some sort of relay im guessing. Any help would be appreciated. Stop guessing and look at a wiring diagram. Auto electric is less complicated than home wiring. There are no relays in this vintage GM. Power comes in at the brake light switch on the pedal, goes to the turn signal switch, and from there to the tail lights. A quick look at the wiring diagram shows that the turn signal and brake lights use EXACTLY the same wires and bulb filaments from the turn signal switch to the tail, so if the turn signals work, the light bulbs, sockets, and wiring are fine from the column back. Your problem is between the turn signal switch and the fuse, which includes the brake switch and the wires in between. My money is either on no power to the switch or the switch is not adjusted properly. Both are easy to test with a test light. If that all works, the problem is isolated to the steering column.

I've had a bad brake light switch in mine and they're cheap and usually in stock at the local parts joints. Also had an issue with not getting a good ground.

Run a jumper from the fuse block and see i it works. Or trace the hot lead back from the switch.

No power to the switch connector? Are you asking us or telling us? Check the fuse again, or the contacts in the fuse box. Verify that you have power on the input side of the fuse.

Just do like bro suggested, if it works with a known power source, then backtrack and correct the problem. If your unsure of what your doing, then please make yourself a fused jumper wire. What your doing is pretty basic 101 stuff, but if your not familiar with the process, before you make any crispy critters, ask LOTS of questions. I promise I`ll behave

Thank guys fuses are all good now but still have no wipers? Thats another time. I have never ran a jumper fuse and have burned wires in the past so i wont be doing that yet. I would rather tear it apart an use the book diagram to trace the wires. Hopefully they are color coded original. I hate wiring. Maybe sunday cuz my son turns 2 on saturday. But im off work from the 3rd to the 14th.

Don't over think it! You are making the jumper wire senario much harder than it is. ALSO: If you have a Multi Tester you can pull the wires of of the brake light switch, set the tester for "ohms resistance" and do a continuity check across the terminals. "Push the button in and out. You'll know if the switch is good or bad instantly.

If electricity scares you, wire a fuse in the jumper wire.

See, he promised to behave. And he couldn't keep that promise.....sad, very sad.
I'm happy to help you with the wiring issue. If you need an ear to bend, let me know. I'm happy to help, I was in the same place you are with wiring until a wise mechanic took the time to work with me and impart his knowledge. I'm happy to pay that forward.

I'm confused by it all, seems like pretty tame dialect if you ask me. I absolutely hate messing with electrical problems, not that I won't do it but it's not on the top of my list of things that enjoy me. Might have something to do with tight spaces.
