I have a friend on LI who is having his 65 400 rebuilt. He is in need of a crankshaft balancer. He tried one from a 455 but it was not the same. Anyone know where he can get a replacement. Will a balancer from a 330 fit?
Thanks, Bob

Does he have one at all, there are places that rebuild them. If not you might call a rebuilder and they might have one.

check out supercars unlimited they sell recondition engine parts Talked to Greg Rollins at Supercars last week. He didn't have any rebuilt originals then but gets them in from time to time. There are aftermarket ones if he's not going original. I'll be over at his place later in the week, can check. I might have one buried somewhere if noone else chimes in. Let me know if you need me to look.

Ok... the person that would consider spending THAT kind of money for a stock balancer (instead of a SFI rated balancer at half the price) is the same person that would also be shopping for original air to put in the tires...

I have an NOS one too, only spent 50 bucks on it. However, it doesnt fit a crank snout. Will not slip on. Its a factory reject. A lot of NOS parts are rejects from the assembly line.

The 1965 & 1966 Oldsmobile parts catalogs both show the same two parts numbers for balancers used on the V-8 engines:
F-85 V-8 4 BC exc. 442 Opt; J88 Hi-Comp......................386350
F-85 442 Opt.; D88, Delta, J/S I, S/F, 98, Tor.................386351
It appears that the F-85 V-8 with a 2 BC, and the low comp. J88 did not use a balancer, but rather a "hub". This is shown in the parts book and is confirmed by the service manual.
There are a variety of pulleys shown depending on equipment.
I do not know what the differences are between the two balancers, but it might be concerning the "fit" on the shaft.(?) The 1966 Olds Chassis Service Manual says:Balancer to crankshaft fit is from .001" tight to .0007" loose. This manual also shows the use of a puller to remove the balancer, which attaches to the threaded holes in the "hub" portion of the balancer.
